The Newcomers
One of the best records you’ve never heard by the best band you don’t know. In the late sixties, due to some contractual shenanigans, The Atlantic label was able to steal the rights to the entire Stax/Volt catalog, which consisted of some of the greatest soul songs ever recorded. In a brilliant but desperate effort to compensate for the lost revenue, the label decided to create an entirely new catalog within a couple of years. It almost worked, but the flood of product caused great Stax songs to compete with great Volt songs. This record was one of the losers, but the quality is superb. From the variety of the musicianship to the tough but sweet vocals, the A Side would have been a hit on any other label at any other time. The B Side is even better, too good to ever be a hit. Most of the world is just too ordinary to embrace something this extraordinary. It just wasn’t meant to be, until now.
